Your Amazing Brain!

BrainWorks, a video from the University of Washington, takes you on a journey through the brain. Kids also visit research labs to learn about brain function and brain research (http://www.uwtv.org/video/player.

 Brainology (http://www.brainology.us/) is an online
program designed to help students develop a growth mind-set. It was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck and researcher Lisa Sorich Blackwell.
 Teens can take a risk-tolerance quiz from a recent National Geographic article about teenage brains (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/

) is a youth education site about the brain from the Dana Foundation. It includes games, online labs, and links to lessons and activities.
 Make a brain cap: University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio outlines an activity that engages students in modeling their understanding of the brain’s anatomy (http://teachhealthk-12.uthscsa.edu/
curriculum/brain/brain01b-BrainCap.asp
).
 Contribute to science: Students can participate in research by taking part in online experiments at Test My Brain (http://www.testmybrain.org/). After they take part in experiments such as identifying emotions from tone of voice or testing their “gut number sense,” students get personalized feedback.

Mount Washington Observatory (MWOBS) – Mesonet

This is the Mount Washington Regional Mesonet - it is used to monitor environmental changes. If you click on one of the monitoring sites, you can use the drop down menus to compare data to other sites in the area and it will create a graph. You can compare wind speed, amount of snowfall, temperature and more!

This will be useful when you are doing your daily journal entry on changes!

Planting Science Projects!

Dear 7B Scientists,

As your teams are setting up to start their research projects, make sure you have bookmarked the Planting Science website - http://www.plantingscience.org/index.php Each team will be setting up their own webpage to upload data and photos to!

You will want to consult with your mentors when you begin formulating research questions. They can help you narrow your focus to find a testable question. As you begin communicating with your scientist mentor, please be aware that they are not online to answer you immediately and it may take a day for them to get back to you.

I'm so excited to be working on this project with you! Make sure you write down any questions that you have to share with your team and your mentor!

Happy Researching!

How is your summer vacation going?

I hope you have been enjoying your summer vacation! I am enjoying mine and have been busy with my family and garden. I had a great time in Kentucky at the Lexington Horse Park during my daughter's National Pony Club Quiz Rally Championship competition - her team came in 28th out of 40 teams from the US and Canada! We found some insects in Kentucky that aren't normally found in this area- the praying mantis and cicadas. I'm looking forward to the start of school in the fall - I love seeing all my old students and meeting and getting to know my new ones! I'd love to hear what you have been up to and if you have found any cool websites that you'd like to share, please leave me a comment or leave a post!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Summer Solstice June 21, 2011

Source: Ward's Science Newsletter
Summer Solstice

Warmer weather and longer days are coming back, and the dawn of another summer season! This year’s summer solstice occurs at 1:16 on June 21st, 2011. At that time, the sun will appear directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer, and the day will bring the maximum possible sunshine for the Northern Hemisphere. In fact, at the North Pole, the sun will be visible for a full 24 hours!

Traditionally, the Summer Solstice is celebrated as a time of new beginnings and the beginning of a lush and fruitful season. Typically, it’s a time when the rains begin and the first harvests are ripe. It was a time of celebration, and seen in popular culture such as Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

But did you know that during this time of warm weather and sunshine we’re actually farthest away from the sun? The reason for the plentiful sunshine and warmth is actually due to the tilt of Earth’s axis. Our axis is tilted 23.5°, and in the summer time the North Pole is tilted towards the sun. It is actually because of this tilt that we have seasons. On Venus, where the axis is nearly vertical, there is no change in season!

After the Summer Solstice our days will once again begin to shorten little by little, though the summer goes on. Be sure to take your sunscreen and enjoy the longer warmer days of the season!
